Summary: A lighthearted, “did you know” style post to share on social media or a blog.

Kenya’s wildlife is full of surprises. Before you hop into your Gushu Tours 4×4, here are five facts to impress your fellow travelers:

1. The Meaning of “Safari”

Did you know the word “Safari” isn’t actually English? It comes from the Swahili word for “journey.” Originally, it comes from the Arabic word safar. So, every time you go on a trip, you’re technically on safari!

2. Elephants are “Right-Tusked” or “Left-Tusked”

Just like humans are right-handed or left-handed, elephants prefer using one tusk over the other for digging or moving branches. You can usually tell which is which because their preferred tusk will be more worn down.

3. The Mara isn’t just a Park—it’s “Spotted”

In the Maasai language (Maa), “Mara” means “spotted.” When you look out over the vast plains, you’ll see the landscape is “spotted” with acacia trees, shadows from clouds, and shrubland.

4. Giraffes Have Black Tongues

Ever wondered why a giraffe’s tongue is dark blue or black? It’s to prevent sunburn! Since they spend all day reaching for leaves with their tongues out, the extra melanin protects them from the harsh African sun.

5. The “Eighth Wonder” is a Team Effort

While the Great Migration is named after the wildebeest, they don’t travel alone. Over 200,000 zebras join them. Zebras eat the long, tough grass, which “mows the lawn” so the wildebeest can reach the tender new shoots underneath!
